Putting children first

Exercise:

What is the impact when a family separates?

Family separation brings huge transitions and difficult challenges for the whole family. But its impact may be different for different family members.

In the table below, write down as many things as you can think about what family separation brings to each of the family members.

When you're thinking about the impact on mum and dad, try to split these up between the practical issues and the emotional impact that each will face.

Try to consider it from all angles. For example, think about each parent as either the main carer or not the main carer, and each as being the leaver and the one who was left.

Think about children at different ages. Will a child of six months feel the same as a child of ten years old?

We've included a few things to get you started.

Write down a list of the difficulties that mothers can face.
